Audio System Design Fundamentals — Speaker Placement

By: Thomas Wenzel

Speaker placement can dramatically impact your listening experience. Poor placement can leave sounds muddy, and the bass can become so amplified that it overwhelms everything else. On the other hand, well-placed speakers can transport you to the performance hall. In the optimal situation, you can actually feel the sound moving around you and the physical distance between the musicians, as if you are sitting on the stage with them. Professional design and installation of an audio visual system is always the best way to get optimal results, but the following steps will help even the do-it-yourselfer with a two speaker system improve the listening experience.

Eric Clapton: From the Cradle to the Crossroads

By: Greg Bahr

Few guitarists, if any, have been as influential as Eric Clapton. He started by learning the riffs of blues masters Freddie King, B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, and Robert Johnson, among others. Combining this encyclopedia of blues licks with his own original phrases, he developed a style which has become the template for blues/rock guitar playing.

Nobody Does It Better

By: Phil Edwards

So, it?s late autumn 1977, it?s a Saturday night, and to a 7-year-old, the chance of staying up late is always welcome. The fact that I?d been ?brave? whilst my dad had administered an ill-advised remedy to my infected, swollen nail-bitten finger, involving a kettle full of boiling water and a bread and potato poltis, had earned me a choice; the cinema, or staying up late to watch Starsky & Hutch. The cinema option would mean I would be home in time for my usual bed-time, so Starsky & Hutch, on the face of it, did seem a good bet. However, there was no choice really. I?d only ever been to the cinema twice, the cinema in our town was not exactly the Odeon in Leicester Square, and the latest movies always took months to arrive. So the cinema it was. I?d never seen a James Bond film, and was only vaguely aware of the concept. People spoke to me like I should know all about it, and in fact I was told that I probably had seen Bond on TV at some point. Maybe I had, maybe I hadn?t. If I had, then it must have been incidental viewing, and I certainly didn?t recall it. But Bond was in town. I was informed that ?The Spy Who Loved Me? was the latest in a long line of James Bond films. My parents gave me the background about Bond being a British Spy who, to quote my dad, was ?sort of like John Steed??powerful words to a 7-year-old Avengers fan! The playground buzz was all about the underwater car, the steel-toothed giant, and the dwarf in the sidecar. An intriguing and irresistible combination of delights for anyone! Surely!

Mel Gibson\’s \”Apocalypto\” Brings the Past Violent Mayan Life into Our Consciousness

By: Ed Bagley

Apocalypto ? 4 Stars (Excellent)

Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto” shows the raw, violent face of the advanced Mayan civilization in its decline, with its rulers insisting that the key to continued prosperity is to build more temples and offer more human sacrifices to their Gods.

The result is the story of innocent Mayans being viciously attacked and their communal way of life being destroyed to meet an insane desire. Killing your own has never been a good idea historically and is perhaps a lesson we need to take more seriously today.

Choosing A Guitar Â? A Guide

By: Liam Gibson

If you have no friends who can play to ask for advice, or, like I was, you are not all that clued up about the genre, then buying your first guitar can be a difficult task. Probably the first obstacle you will have to face when you decide to learn to play the guitar is buying one to start with.
